UDoodle: the simple digital notebook for schools, families and organisations

A digital notebook for writing and drawing on any tablet or computer, with nothing to install and just four buttons to learn.

  • Teachers or parents can see children's work from anywhere
  • Write with a stylus, a finger or a mouse
  • Pass a digital pen round the class on a shared whiteboard
  • Carry on at home or anywhere else, on any tablet or computer

The notebook on the home page works straight away, with no account.

Who it's for

Every plan includes every feature. You only choose how many people it's for.

Individuals

Your own notebooks for notes, sketches and ideas. Sign in with your email on any device and carry on where you left off.

1 person · £20 a year

Families

Add your children and grandparents in a few minutes. Each of them gets their own account and notebooks, with no email address or password needed, and you can see what they've drawn from your own phone.

Up to 6 people · £40 a year

Classrooms

Paste in your class list and every student gets their own account and notebooks. Open any student's work whenever you like, at school or at home.

Up to 30 students · £100 a year

Organisations

Care homes, day centres, clubs and charities. Staff add residents, members or co-workers once; after that, each person taps their name and starts drawing, with nothing to type or save.

Any size · invoiced

A notebook for everyone

Plenty of us still think best with a pen in hand, whatever our age. Children practise their letters and sums, while grown-ups work things out, take notes or map out an idea. It all happens on the tablet, phone or computer you already have, and every line is saved as you write.

Pencraft matters

Writing by hand builds pen control and letter formation, and helps ideas stick. UDoodle keeps that practice going on the tablets and computers you already have.

Perfect for young learners and beginners

Four buttons to learn, no menus, and nothing to save or file. Young children and people new to tablets can pick up a stylus and start straight away. Setting it up for a grandparent? Add them to a family plan, and all they do is tap their name.

Notes, sums and sketches

Lined pages for notes and lists, a grid for working things out, and blank pages for mind maps and plans.

Less paper, less waste

Fewer notepads, exercise books and worksheets to buy or print, and no piles of paper to keep.

Parent / Teacher View

Everything children write is saved to their own notebook as they work. Open their notebooks on your own computer, tablet or phone, whenever you like: no books to collect, no photos to take, nothing to upload.

Teachers

See the whole class's latest pages on one screen as they write. Look through any pupil's notebooks in class, in the staffroom or at home, and download them as PDFs.

Parents

On the family plan, see what your children have written and drawn, even when you're not in the room. If their school uses UDoodle, their teacher can invite you to see their school notebooks too.

Learning from home

Every pupil has a sign-in card you can print. At home, they scan its QR code (or open the class link and type their 4-digit code) and carry on in the same notebook you see in class.

How it works for a family, class or organisation

As the teacher, manager or parent, you set everything up from your own account. The people you add, whether they're pupils, children or residents, don't need an email address, a password or any technical know-how.

Add your students, children or co-workers

Sign up with your email, then type in their names or paste a list. Each of them gets their own UDoodle account and notebooks.

Simple sign-in

Each tablet or computer that several people share, such as a class set of iPads or the family tablet, only needs setting up once: scan the QR code shown in your account, or type in the setup code. From then on, everyone simply taps their name and starts writing (you can ask for their 4-digit code too). On their own devices, they scan the QR code on their sign-in card, or open your login link and type their name and code.

Saving takes care of itself

There's no save button and no files to look for. Everything they write goes straight into their own notebooks, and you can look through them from your own account, wherever you are.

Put it on the big screen

A shared whiteboard puts one page on the classroom screen for the whole class to work on, with you passing a digital pen from pupil to pupil.

  • Open a shared whiteboard on the classroom computer and show it full screen on the projector or interactive display.
  • Hand the digital pen to a pupil: they draw on their own tablet, and every stroke appears on the big screen as they make it.
  • Draw on your own iPad as you walk round the room, or straight onto a touch screen at the front.

Also included

The details that make it work day to day, in a classroom, a care home or at home.

Class at a glance

See every pupil's latest page on one screen. It updates by itself as they write.

Parents can follow along

Invite up to two parents or carers per pupil to see their notebooks from home. They can look, but can't change anything. Available on class, school and organisation plans.

Keeps going without Wi-Fi

If the connection drops, they carry on writing. Their work is kept on the device and saves itself once they're back online.

Lined, grid or blank

Choose the paper for each page: lines for writing, a grid for maths, or blank for drawing.

Download as PDF

Save any notebook as a PDF to print, email or keep.

Four languages

Use UDoodle in English, French, Spanish or German, and switch whenever you like.

Co-teachers

Invite up to three colleagues or teaching assistants to help you run a class or group.

No adverts, no AI training

We don't show adverts or use advertising or tracking cookies, and we never use anyone's drawings to train AI. The only thing we count is visits to our website, and we don't even do that on class tablets.

Built by a school IT manager

UDoodle was built by school IT guy Joe, drawing on 15 years of hands-on experience in classrooms. It's designed around what actually works for teachers and pupils: no complicated setup, no passwords for young children, and nothing standing between a pupil and the page.

The simple digital notebook for schools

UDoodle gives every pupil their own digital exercise book to write and draw in, with a stylus, a finger or a mouse, on the tablets and computers your school already has. Everything saves itself as they go, so you can look through any pupil's work from anywhere, the moment it's done. There's nothing to install, pupils don't need email addresses, and there are just four buttons to learn.

Why schools choose UDoodle

Handwriting still matters. Writing by hand builds pen control and letter formation, and helps ideas stick, so that practice shouldn't stop just because a class has tablets. With UDoodle, pupils keep writing by hand, with a stylus or a finger, and you get something paper can't give you: work you can see straight away, wherever you are.

Simple enough for the youngest pupils. In class, they tap their name and start writing. There are no usernames or email addresses, and only four buttons to learn: pen, eraser, typing and undo. Teachers set up a class in minutes, and there's nothing to install or keep up to date.

Nothing gets lost, and there's less paper. Every line is kept the moment it's written, even if the Wi-Fi drops, and pupils can't delete a page. The same notebook opens at home on any tablet or computer, so homework and remote learning pick up where the lesson left off, with no worksheets to print and no exercise books to carry.

See every pupil's work, from anywhere

There's no pile of books to take home and nothing to photograph or upload. Open any pupil's notebook on your own computer, tablet or phone, in the classroom, the staffroom or at home, and turn the pages just as you would an exercise book.

During a lesson, Class at a glance shows every pupil's latest page on one screen, updating as they write, so you can see who's flying and who needs a hand without leaving your desk. Co-teachers and teaching assistants can see the class's work too, and any notebook can be saved as a PDF for parents' evening or a pupil's records.

You can also invite up to two parents or carers for each pupil to look through their child's notebooks from home. They see only their own child's work, and can't change anything.

Up and running in minutes

Create your class and paste in your pupils' first names: a class of thirty takes about five minutes. Each pupil gets their own 4-digit code and a sign-in card to print, showing their name, their code, your class's web link and a QR code that signs them straight in.

In school, pupils just tap their name on a class tablet. On any other device, such as a tablet at home, they scan the QR code on their card, or open your class's web link and type their name and code. If a card goes missing, you can replace it, and the old one stops working.

You can invite up to three co-teachers or teaching assistants to share the class with you. Pupils can't delete a notebook or a page, and if one archives a notebook by mistake, you can bring it back.

Class tablets in school, and devices at home

Tablets and laptops that pupils share in school are set up just once, with a code from your account. After that they open straight to your class's names, ready to go. One device can be set up for several classes, so a single trolley of iPads can serve the whole school. If you'd like pupils to type their 4-digit code as well as tapping their name, you can switch that on.

Pupils' own devices, and computers at home, don't need setting up. Pupils scan the QR code on their sign-in card, and a device at home can remember them. Or give them your class's web link, such as udoodle.co.uk/g/year-2, to save as a bookmark or on their Home Screen: they type their name and 4-digit code to sign in.

Why the difference? A set-up tablet shows everyone in the class, and unless you ask for codes, anyone holding it can open any pupil's notebook. That's ideal for a trolley of school iPads, but not for a device that goes home.

A shared whiteboard for the whole class

Put a shared whiteboard up on the classroom screen and teach from it just as you would a normal whiteboard. When you want a pupil to have a go, pass them the digital pen: they write on their own tablet, and the whole class watches it appear live. One tap takes the pen back.

Only one pupil holds the pen at a time, so nobody can scribble over the lesson, and you can always draw yourself, whoever has the pen.

Safeguarding and data protection

We're committed to keeping children safe and their data protected, and UDoodle was designed for primary schools from the start. Pupils don't need an email address and we never contact them. There are no adverts, and pupils' work is never used to train AI.

Pupils only ever see their own notebooks and the shared whiteboards their teacher adds them to. A data processing agreement is available for schools, and our Privacy Policy explains exactly what we keep and why.

Works on the devices you already have

UDoodle runs in the web browser, so it works on the iPads, Android tablets, Chromebooks, laptops and desktop computers you already have, with nothing to install. It's at its best with a stylus, such as an Apple Pencil, but a finger on a touch screen or a mouse works too.

If the Wi-Fi drops in the middle of a lesson, pupils carry on writing. Their work is kept on the tablet and sent as soon as the connection is back.

For your IT team

Because UDoodle is a website, there's no app to deploy and no device profile to manage. The only thing to plan is how your shared school devices are set up, and these are the details your IT team will want:

  • Set up only school-owned, shared devices. Pupils' own devices just use their sign-in card, or the class's web link and their code.
  • Setting up: the teacher creates a 6-digit setup code in their account. It lasts 15 minutes and works on up to 35 devices for a class of 30. On each device, scan the QR code, or open udoodle.co.uk/setup and type the code. Or open the class's web link on the device and tap "Set up this tablet": it shows a number, and the teacher lets it in from their account.
  • What the device keeps: a random sign-in key for each class it's set up for, held in the browser's website storage and a cookie. We don't use MAC addresses, serial numbers or any other device identifier, and pupils' work isn't kept on the device, except drawing done offline that hasn't been sent yet.
  • How long it lasts: the key keeps working while the device is used, and stops after 120 days (a term) without use. The teacher can switch a device off from their account at any time, and anyone signed in on it is signed out within a minute.
  • What makes a device forget its setup: clearing the browser's website data; private or guest browsing; profiles that are wiped at sign-out, such as ephemeral Chromebook sessions or temporary Shared iPad sessions; and, on iPads, Safari removing a website's data after about a week without use. Set iPads up from a Home Screen icon, which Safari doesn't clear. If a device forgets, set it up again with a new code, or open the class's web link on it and tap "Set up this tablet": nothing saved is lost.
  • Each browser is separate: Safari, Chrome and a Home Screen icon each keep their own setup, and so does each user profile on a Chromebook.
  • Web filters: allow udoodle.co.uk and *.supabase.co, including secure WebSocket connections, which shared whiteboards use.
  • Setting up many devices at once: ten wrong setup codes in a row from the school's internet connection pause setup for 15 minutes. Any correct code resets the count.

Price

A class plan costs £100 a year for a teacher and up to 30 pupils, with every feature included. For a whole school, ask us for a quote and we'll invoice you.

If you change your mind within 14 days of your first payment, we'll refund it in full. And if your class plan comes up for renewal over the summer holidays, everything keeps working until 15 October, so nothing stops while school is closed.

Setup guides

See exactly how UDoodle works before you start: step-by-step guides with a picture of every screen.

  • Setup guide for teachers (PDF, 23 pages, 3.5 MB): Adding a class, sign-in cards, tablets, the shared whiteboard, seeing pupils' work, PDFs and sending copies.
  • Setup guide for school admins (PDF, 16 pages, 1.6 MB): Adding classes, inviting teachers, tablets across the school, a checklist for your IT team, safeguarding and data protection.

The guides are also in French, Spanish and German: Guide de démarrage pour les enseignants · Guide de démarrage pour les administrateurs d’école · Guía de inicio para docentes · Guía de inicio para administradores del colegio · Einstiegsanleitung für Lehrkräfte · Einstiegsanleitung für die Schuladministration.

Questions schools ask

Do pupils need an email address?

No. The teacher adds each pupil by first name. In school, pupils sign in by tapping their name on a class tablet (the teacher can ask for their 4-digit code too), and they never receive email from us.

Which devices does it work on?

Any tablet or computer with an up-to-date web browser: iPads, Android tablets, Chromebooks, laptops and desktop computers, plus the classroom's projector or interactive display for shared whiteboards. It works best with a stylus, and also with a finger or a mouse. There's nothing to install.

Can several classes share the same tablets?

Yes. One tablet or laptop can be set up for several classes, even from different teachers, so a school's set of shared devices works for every class. Pupils tap their class, then their name.

Can teachers see pupils' work?

Yes, at any time. The teacher and any co-teachers can open every pupil's notebooks from their own account, on any computer, tablet or phone, as soon as the work is done. A teacher can also choose not to see a particular pupil's notebooks. Pupils only ever see their own notebooks and the shared whiteboards they're added to.

Does it work for remote learning and homework?

Yes. Every pupil has a 4-digit code and a sign-in card. At home they scan the card's QR code, or open your class's web link and type their name and code, and their own notebooks open. You see their work just as you would in class.

Is there a data processing agreement?

Yes, one is available for schools. Our Privacy Policy sets out what we keep, where it's stored and for how long.

What happens if the Wi-Fi drops?

Pupils keep drawing. Their work is kept on the tablet and sent as soon as the connection is back, even if another pupil uses the tablet in between.

What does our IT team need to know?

The "For your IT team" section above explains how setting up shared devices works, what can make a device forget its setup, and what to allow through your web filter: udoodle.co.uk and *.supabase.co, including secure WebSocket connections.

How much does it cost?

£100 a year for a class of up to 30 pupils, with every feature included. For a whole school, ask us for a quote and we'll invoice you. If you change your mind within 14 days of your first payment, we'll refund it in full.

Can we try it first?

Yes. The notebook on our home page works straight away, with no account. When you're ready, setting up a class takes a few minutes.

Setting up UDoodle for a group

Whether it's your family, your class, or an organisation such as a care home or day centre, here's what it looks like — for you, and for the people you set it up for.

The people you add just tap their name. That's it.

On a tablet you've set up, UDoodle opens to a grid of names and icons. Each person finds theirs, taps it and starts drawing. There's no email address or password, and nothing to remember except which name or icon is theirs.

Everyone also has a four-digit code for signing in on other devices, such as a tablet at home. On the tablets you've set up, they only need it if you choose to ask for it.

You can see their work, from anywhere

Everything they write is saved to their own notebook as they go. Open it from your own account on any computer, tablet or phone: a teacher in the staffroom or at home, a parent at work.

It works for learning from home too. Everyone has a sign-in card you can print: they scan its QR code on any device, or open your login link and type their 4-digit code, and carry on in the same notebook.

For families

Setting up

Type in each family member's name and pick a profile icon for them. It takes two minutes, perhaps three. Everyone is given a four-digit code, which you can change, and if a teenager would like some privacy, you can make the family tablet ask for codes too.

What your family sees

They open UDoodle on the family tablet, tap their name, and start drawing. On their own phone or computer, they scan their sign-in card once and it remembers them. Everyone's notebooks are their own.

What you can do

See everyone's notebooks from your own phone, tablet or computer, wherever you are, or switch this off for anyone who'd rather keep theirs private (there's a switch next to each name). You can add people, change profile icons and set or change codes, all from your own account.

For classrooms

Setting up

Paste in a list of names, one per line, straight from your register. UDoodle creates an account for each pupil, with their own 4-digit code, and a class of thirty takes about five minutes. You can see any pupil's code at any time by tapping the eye icon next to their name, so nobody is locked out because they've forgotten it.

Sign-in cards you can print

Print a sheet of cards, one per pupil, each showing their profile icon, name and code, and a QR code that signs them in when they point a tablet's camera at it. Keep them in planners or send them home. A five-year-old doesn't need to remember anything, and if a card goes missing, you make a new one and the old one stops working.

What pupils see

On a class tablet, they see the names of everyone in their class. They tap their own (and type their code, if you've chosen to ask for codes), and they're drawing. A note on their screen tells them that you can see their notebooks.

What you can do

Open any pupil's notebooks whenever you like, from any computer, tablet or phone, at school or at home: no books to collect. Add pupils, archive leavers, reset codes, all from your own account.

Bring in a colleague

Invite up to three co-teachers by email: a teaching assistant, a helper, whoever helps run the class. They can add and edit pupils, reset codes and set up class tablets. They can't see billing or change the class name, and they don't need to buy anything.

Draw together

Create a shared whiteboard and add the whole class with one tap on "Add all my pupils". Hand the digital pen to one pupil at a time: they draw on their own tablet while everyone watches on the big screen, and you can see at a glance who's joined.

September

Archive last year's pupils: their work is kept, their names disappear from the class tablets, and their places are freed up for the new class. Then paste in the new names, and you're ready.

For organisations

Setting up

Add people by pasting in a list of names, and give each person a profile icon and colour they'll easily recognise. Everyone also gets a four-digit code for other devices, but on the tablets you set up, people just tap their name unless you choose to ask for codes.

What people see

Large names and icons on a simple screen. They tap theirs and they're drawing. No typing, no long passwords, no menus.

Who can manage it

The person who set it up, plus up to three colleagues they invite — an activity coordinator, a key worker, whoever's on shift. Any of them can add people, reset codes and set up a tablet.

If someone forgets which profile icon is theirs

A member of staff can look them up in the list and show them which icon is theirs. That's why the icons are large and easy to tell apart.

Drawing together on a shared whiteboard

Start a shared whiteboard and add your whole group in one tap. You hand a digital pen to one person at a time: whoever has it draws on their own screen, and it appears on yours as they draw. Everyone else sees it a moment later, and a row of profile icons at the top shows who's there.

Use it for a group exercise, a brainstorm, working through a problem together, or just drawing for the fun of it. Everyone you add can see every page, and draws when you hand them the pen.

You decide who's on it and who has the pen, and you can take the pen back at any time. You can always draw yourself.

Common questions

Does it work on iPads?

Yes. Safari, Chrome, or any browser. Nothing to install.

Does it work on Chromebooks and laptops?

Yes. It runs in the browser.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, though a tablet gives more room to draw.

Should we set up everyone's own devices?

No, only tablets or computers that several people share and that stay in one place, such as a class set of iPads or the family tablet. That's because a set-up device shows everyone's names, and unless you ask for codes, anyone holding it can open anyone's notebook. On their own phone, tablet or computer, people scan the QR code on their sign-in card (the device can then remember them), or open your login link and type their 4-digit code.

Does everyone need an email address or password?

No. Only the person setting up the group needs an email. Everyone else taps their name or icon on a set-up tablet, or scans their sign-in card. Each person also has a four-digit code for signing in on other devices.

Can I see a pupil's code if they've forgotten it?

Yes. Tap the eye icon next to their name, or print their sign-in card.

Can more than one adult manage the group?

Yes. Invite up to three co-teachers by email. They don't need to pay.

Can they use it at home?

Yes. They scan the QR code on their sign-in card with the device's camera, or open your login link and type their name and 4-digit code, and their own notebooks open.

Who can see someone's notebooks?

The person themselves, whoever set up the group, and any co-teachers. You can switch this off for anyone (there's a switch next to each name), and a note on each person's screen tells them whether you can see their notebooks. On class, school and organisation plans, you can also invite up to two parents or carers per person to look at their notebooks.

Can we get the work out?

Yes. Any notebook can be downloaded as a PDF.

What if a tablet is lost or broken?

If it's lost, tap Revoke next to it in your account, and it can no longer open anyone's notebooks. If it's broken, set up the replacement with a new setup code, or open your login link on it, tap "Set up this tablet" and then allow it from your account. All the work is saved online; a tablet only holds drawing it hasn't sent yet.

What happens in September?

Archive last year's pupils and paste in the new names. Archiving frees up their places, and their work is kept.

What happens if the subscription lapses?

Nothing is lost. Everyone can still open and download their work, and drawing switches back on as soon as you subscribe again.

Prices

No app to install. Nothing to save. No password to remember. Type your email, and you're drawing in seconds — on any tablet, at any age.

Nothing to install

It's a website, so there's nothing to download and nothing to update. Open UDoodle on a tablet, a laptop, or a phone, and your notebooks are there.

No password, ever

Type your email address and we'll send you a six-digit code. Type it in, and you're in. On a tablet you use at home or in class, you'll usually stay signed in and never see a login screen again.

Four buttons to learn, that's all

Pen, eraser, type and undo. Choosing a colour or a kind of paper is a single tap, and everything else is out of the way. Simple enough for a six-year-old, and for anyone who'd rather not learn another app.

As many notebooks as you like

Start a new notebook whenever you need one, with up to 200 pages in each. Every notebook has its own cover, which you can label in your own handwriting.

Draw together, passing a digital pen

Share a whiteboard with your family or your class and hand a digital pen to one person at a time. Whoever has it draws, and everyone else watches it appear. You choose exactly who's on it.

Choose a plan

Every plan includes everything. You're only choosing how many people it's for.

  • Just for me, £20 a year: As many notebooks as you like, all to yourself.
  • For my family, £40 a year: Up to 6 people. You set everyone up in a couple of minutes; they just tap their name to start drawing. Grandparents and children never need an email address of their own.
  • For a class, £100 a year: Up to 30 pupils. Add your class by pasting in a list of names. No pupil emails or passwords, and nothing for the children to set up.
  • For a school or organisation, price on request: As many people as you need, invoiced against your purchase order. We'll help you set everything up.

Subscriptions renew annually through PayPal, and you can cancel from your PayPal account at any time. If your plan ends, your notebooks stay safe to view and download for a good while afterwards, long enough to change your mind or get everything out, and you can start drawing again as soon as you resubscribe. Full details are in our Terms.

Setting it up for someone else?

That's exactly what UDoodle is designed for. Add the people in your family or class, and each of them simply taps their own name to start, with no email address, no password and nothing to set up. They also get a four-digit code and a sign-in card you can print, for using other devices. To get the family or class tablet ready, scan the QR code shown in your account, or type in the six-digit setup code.
